HISTORY
The Drums and Pipes have been part of the regiment since its inception
in 1885. Bandsmen have been involved in all the major campaigns of the
Regiment. In peace time, the Band supports the Regiment in its ceremonial
and recruitment parades.
SOME PICTURES
We have started a Picture Gallery., which needs
to be expanded over time.
COMPETITIONS
The band are keen participants in the Pipe Band of South Africa championships.
As such, it has to travel away to Gauteng or Natal to compete three times
a year. This is very expensive, and means that fundraising is an important
part of the band's activities. During 1998 the band was promoted to Grade
One in the PBSA competition circuit, since it had won the Grade Two (now
Grade 3) championship two years running.
More recently, the band has teamed up with the 1 Medical Batallion (Durband),
and in 2003 competed in Grade 3 (formerly Grade 2. This arrangement works
well, since it provides both bands with strength in both drumming and piping
numbers.
SPONSORSHIPS
The severe cutbacks in the funding of the SANDF has meant that the Band
is entirely dependent on private transport to attend competitions. We are
very grateful for the support we have received over the years from a number
of organisations.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 1998
The Band raised the funds necessary to compete in four competitions
(Perth, North Berwick, Worlds, Crieff) during August 1998. We travelled
to Scotland from the 3rd August to 18th. We stayed
at the Glasgow Nautical College in Thistle Street, Glasgow. Have a look
at our itinerary.
EDINBURGH TATTOO 2000, 2002 and 2004
The band spend 5 weeks in Scotland during July/August 2000 and 2002 to
participate in the Royal Tribute and the Tattoo itself. The Queen Mother
has sadly passed on, so the band is proud to have been able to parade for
her , especially since she was Hon Col. of the Regiment for many years.
During 2002 the Tribute was to Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating her Jubilee.
During 2004, the band has received sponsorship from Monarch Insurance,
and will travel once again to Edinburgh.
MANAGEMENT
The Band is currently lead by P/M Charles Canning and Drum Sergeant
Duncan Tee.
TUTORING
The Band is always keen to train pipers and drummers. Please contact
P/M Charles Canning at (021) 422 1666 during office hours. We are involved
in teaching local school children.
OUR CD
We have made the first CD (Under the Table)
produced by a South African Pipe Band. We would like you to order
it, since all proceeds go towards Band expenses. This CD is actually out
of print, and we are working on a new compilation. However, we will be
able to make individual copies at the same price as before, but with a
slightly different sleeve.
Please cotnact the webmaster
